WASHINGTON ASSOCIATION FOR
LEARNING ALTERNATIVES
SPRING CONFERENCE
(Ocean Shores, Washington)
10 - 11 March 2006
"When the Inmates Take Over the Asylum: Power Management in
the Classroom" —
Using the “Integrative Power Management Model” — what has been
called, “classroom kung fu” — classroom power dynamics can
be leveraged to create welcoming, effective, and stimulating educational experiences
for students. This new approach, developed and introduced in this program by
author and theorist Ari Cowan, draws heavily from Cowan’s acclaimed “Violence
Integrative Prevention and Restoration (PAR) Model.” The IPM
model is a significant departure from the traditional “domination” model
for dealing with students in the classroom. It incorporates new thinking about
and language for describing power, provides a new structure for distinguishing
between healthy and unhealthy power, and provides tools for leveraging classroom
dynamics which work for students, teachers, and other education stakeholders.
"Rethinking Violence: A Short Survival Course for Educators
and Parents" — In a dramatic departure from the traditional “punitive” model
for responding and preventing violence, author Ari Cowan introduced
a revolutionary approach to dealing with bullying, harassment, and
all other forms of violence. This practical and inspiring multimedia
presentation included discussion, extensive resource materials, and
the acclaimed “Heart of Healing” video.

for preventing and responding to violence were covered. Participants had the

develop powerful new prevention and response skills, and obtain additional
resources that can be applied immediately in the school setting. A fascinating,
practical, and often moving presentation.

PARTNERS IN PEACE CONFERENCE
(San Diego, California)
17 October 2002
"In the Shadow of
9/11 - Rethinking the Road to Peace" — the first of two plenary
addresses by Edvita's Ari Cowan. This presentation explored lessons from the
events of 9/11 and America's "War on Terror." Through lecture, discussion,
and use of audio and visual aids, the presentation examined opportunities to
rethink how we deal with violence (interpersonal to international), connect
with each other, and create lasting peace. Ari suggested that there is an urgent
need to apply new ways of answering three ontological questions: Who am I?
What is the nature of the world? What is my role in the world? The keynote
focused on positive solutions to violence intervention and prevention which
go beyond orthodox (and often, ineffective) responses. A number of practical
suggestions were provided for attendees to consider.
"Acts of Courage,
Acts of Cowardice: Healing the Violence" — Ari's second plenary
address. Going beyond the traditional punitive, social and political models,
this presentation showcased Edvita's new and innovative "integrative" model
stressing practical and effective prevention and healing of abuse and neglect.
The model includes seven key components and is applied in the context of five
aspects of human existence: the physical, emotional, mental, environmental,
and spiritual. It also provides a matrix in which each of these components
can be assessed in terms of an individual's experience with violence. This
permits those working to reduce and end violence to apply the model immediately
and to create more effective responses to fit their specific circumstances.
